Paintings – Urban Analogy Series

Canvases created using very old, multilayered wall paint surfaces that are transferred onto wood panels.

I have perfected a process that allows me to remove old interior wall paint surfaces from abandoned buildings to use as my canvases. Each unique textured surface used in this body of work is at least 150 years old.

The significance of this work lies upon the importance given to the weathered and worn urban surfaces for their intrinsic value. While most walls surfaces touched by a restoration technique have some kind of tangible historic importance (frescos or murals) in URBAN ANALOGIES I am giving importance to these commonplace textures for the intangible memory that they possess and the passage of time that they portray.

‟When I use these old wall surfaces, I’m actually using wall surfaces that are painted by generations of people that came before me. So all those layers are also layers in time and memory.”
